Oft diente Ovid den Künstlern jedoch nur als Ausgangspunkt für ihre ganz eigene Interpretation der Sagen und Geschichten aus dem Altertum. In der vorliegenden Arbeit soll die Episode von der Liebesgöttin Venus und dem Kriegsgott Mars im Vordergrund stehen, deren Affäre von dem Sonnengott Sol entdeckt, und von Venus Ehemann Vulkan gerächt wird. Der Hauptschwerpunkt der Arbeit soll dabei auf Tintorettos Gemälde „ Vulkan überrascht Venus und Mars“ liegen ( Jacopo Tintoretto: Vulkan überrascht Venus und Mars, Öl auf Leinwand, one hundred thirty five x 198 cm, um 1550-1555, München, Alte Pinakothek). In der Italienischen Renaissance fand guy vor allem zwei Aspekte dieser Geschichte erheiternd: Einmal das Thema zweier, miteinander konkurrierender Männer, ein verbotener Liebhaber und ein betrogener Ehemann, die um die Gunst einer schönen Frau wetteifern. Zum anderen das Thema der Konfrontation des tapferen, aber zugleich auch zornigen, unberechenbaren und mitunter auch bösartigen Gott, als Teil seiner kriegerischen Natur mit der sanften und schönen Göttin der Liebe. In der folgenden Arbeit werde ich zunächst eine genaue Bildbeschreibung des Gemäldes vornehmen, um es anschließend mit dem ovidschen textual content vergleichen zu können. Dabei soll erläutert werden, inwieweit der Künstler sich mit seinem Werk an die literarische Vorlage hielt oder sich von ihr entfernt hat. Es wird auch berücksichtigt, welche anderen bildthematischen und literarischen Einflüsse möglicherweise bei der Entstehung des Gemäldes mitgewirkt haben. Im Anschluss werde ich zusammenfassend versuchen, herauszustellen wie Tintorettos Werk Ovids Textpassage interpretiert haben könnte.
